Automatic subtitles are not just about the Generate button

When you turn a lecture, product demo, or interview into subtitles, the first question is usually “How accurate will the transcript be?” Accuracy matters, but it is not the only source of work. The bigger cleanup often comes from choosing the wrong file format, creating lines that are too long for the screen, or correcting the same product term across the whole file.

Before you use VMAI Subtitle Generator, plan the subtitle as an editable asset. These six checks are about reducing cleanup time, not just getting a first draft quickly.

1. Decide whether you need SRT or VTT

If you choose the format before generation, you avoid the common problem of having a finished transcript that your next tool does not expect. When in doubt, SRT is usually the safer starting point; use VTT when the web player workflow is clear.

2. Check whether auto language detection is enough

Automatic language detection is convenient, but it is not always the best setting. If your file is clearly in one language, choosing the recognition language yourself can make the first pass easier to clean up.

Check the language setting especially when:

  • a Korean video includes frequent English product names or abbreviations;
  • an English lesson is mostly one language from start to finish;
  • an interview has background noise or overlapping speech;
  • a short clip gives the system very little speech to detect.

Choosing the language will not magically fix every proper noun, but it narrows the first draft and usually reduces correction time.

3. Decide how to handle silence and pauses

A subtitle is not only the right text. It also needs the right timing. If the speaker pauses often, or if the recording has long silent gaps, check the Voice Activity Detection (VAD) setting before you generate.

VAD helps separate speech regions more cleanly. A stricter setting can ignore noise, but it may also miss softer speech. A looser setting may keep more audio, but it can treat background noise like speech. Start with the default, then review whether pauses are being joined or cut in an unnatural way.

4. Prepare context for AI subtitle refinement

AI subtitle refinement can help with punctuation and recognition cleanup. It works better when you give it a short hint about the topic.

If names, product terms, or course vocabulary matter, write them down before generation. You can still use find/replace after the subtitles are created, but context gives the first draft a better direction.

5. Plan line length by screen, not by document

A subtitle file looks like a text file, but viewers read it on top of a video. Long lines can cover important visuals. Short display times can disappear before the viewer finishes reading.

Before generating, decide how strict the formatting should be.

Korean and English also differ in length and reading rhythm. If you plan to translate the subtitles later, do not make the source subtitles too dense.

6. Treat Credits as an experiment budget

Subtitle generation uses Credits based on the selected recognition settings and file length. VMAI shows Credit information before generation, so it is worth testing with a short sample before processing a long file.

A safer workflow looks like this:

  1. Test 30–60 seconds with your SRT/VTT, language, VAD, and AI subtitle refinement settings.
  2. Add context if key terms are wrong.
  3. Review line length and timing.
  4. Generate the full file only after the settings look stable.
